I’m No Superstar

I’m No Superstar is a blog for people like me who want to make a difference in the world but know they aren’t activists. Each post contains a social action idea that most of us could do, a book that’s worth reading, or a link to a website that offers other ideas. Oh, and it’s all introduced by a sometimes quirky story from my life.

To Give or Not to Give, That Is the Guilt-Inducing Question

We’re headed into that fall season when the begging letters begin to show up in the mailbox, when the charity event invites roll into our inboxes and when our friends hope we’ll help them by buying their kids’ wrapping paper, their favorite charities’ fair-trade item or their own newly published books.  And the guilt rises.

Entering Their Pain

What causes girls to end up working in strip clubs? Some are naive enough to believe it will be a step toward a legitimate acting or dancing career. Others say they just want to make some fast money. Having a man pay to view her body can make a woman feel desirable and in a perverted way boost

“No.” Is a Complete Sentence

In a couple of conversations with people in the past week they’ve mentioned the need to not overcommit themselves, especially as they start new jobs or ministries. I reminded them of something we tend to forget: “No” is a complete sentence. So often when we say no to an opportunity or a responsibility we say

What Makes People Happy?

Thousands of women. All in the same place. Honestly, I’ve never done well with that. I had two older brothers. We had three guys who lived with our family at various points when I was in high school. College was the first place I ever had the opportunity to live with all girls. Hated it.

What Are You Up To?

I wish I were more disciplined to blog more often. I try to blog at least once a week, but it doesn’t always happen. Life happens instead—work projects, fun times, granddaughter activities, church stuff, writers conferences, sleep, doctors’ appointments, executor responsibilities, bill paying and budgets. You know the drill. I’d love to blog more. I

I’m an Animal (fan)

When Les and I put up our Christmas tree, we have two ornaments that receive pride of place. One is a tiny Raggedy Ann made by quilling, which is tightly rolled paper. She’s only about an inch tall. After we place her near the top center of the tree, she looks so vulnerable that we
