Airing My Dirty Laundry Secret

I try to be environmentally aware and to act accordingly. (This does not, however, keep me from driving 30 minutes a couple of times a week to hang out at Panera. In fact, if someone really want to help the environment, they would open a Panera in Ephrata or Akron, so I wouldn’t use so much gas.)

One thing I have clung to, though,

I try to be environmentally aware and to act accordingly. (This does not, however, keep me from driving 30 minutes a couple of times a week to hang out at Panera. In fact, if someone really want to help the environment, they would open a Panera in Ephrata or Akron, so I wouldn’t use so much gas.)

One thing I have clung to, though, besides Panera, has been Bounce dryer sheets. I know, I know. Every book on caring for the environment says if you do nothing else, at least give up the dryer sheets. But we’ve always liked the way our clothes smell and feel after a tumble with the Bounce.

I didn’t think I would ever give them up.

But then Hana Haatainen Caye, aka The Green Grandma, recommended Woolzies dryer balls. Soon after Lisa Bartelt gave me the link to get a set of 6 Woolzies for free, so I could try them and blog about them. I was game. (Anything free is worth trying!)

Woolzies are handmade from wool, so I was a bit worried since I am highly sensitive to wool. But the Woolzies folks said it wouldn’t bother me, and they were right. As an added bonus, they are made by women in Nepal so they provide work for women who need the steady income.

Les handles a large percentage of our laundry, and he’s been a big fan of the dryer sheet, so I wasn’t sure he would even try the balls. But he adapted quickly.

Woolzies provide lift in the laundry, so the laundry dries faster. (Woolzies says by at least 25%; I can’t verify that, but the drying time is definitely less.) They last for a thousand loads, so the $34.95 price definitely saves money over dryer sheets. And we simply leave them in the dryer. (It only takes a few loads before you learn to not swing the door open wide immediately to keep them from bouncing all over the laundry room.)

You can definitely hear the balls doing their thing, so that might be a downside if your dryer is near a child’s bedroom or somewhere else you want things quiet.

We’re almost entirely Bounce-free, thanks to the bounce in our Woolzies. No more exposure to chemicals or having the lint screen coated in dryer sheet film. No more dirty laundry secrets.

If you’re brave enough, put real bounce in your laundry with your own pack of Woolzies.
